Doing the Most Good

Elliot’s interest in animal welfare began with a dog. In the early 2000s, he and his wife, Rena, brought home a Havanese pup. “Cami opened our eyes to the souls, emotions and wonders of animals,” says Elliot. Inspired by their deep connection with Cami, he and Rena began learning about many animal issues, including factory farming, puppy mills and more.

Elliot continues to work as a part-time clean energy consultant and advisor. His concern for the planet helped him make the connection between climate change and factory farming. He and Rena stopped eating animal products, and Elliot is excited that innovations such as lab-grown meat can reduce harm. With his advocacy, he hopes to stop what he describes as “the unspeakable and unnecessary cruelty and suffering inflicted on animals.”

A big-picture thinker, Elliot believes in big-picture solutions—which is what drew him to the Humane Society of the United States. Alongside Rena, Elliot attended many animal welfare events. He was impressed that the HSUS pushed for big-picture change while also carrying out investigations and rescues.

After Rena passed away in 2018, Elliot began working with the HSUS to ensure her legacy would help animals. Since then, he’s decided to include the HSUS in his own estate plans. “I want the gift in my will to move the needle, to join with others to meaningfully reduce if not eliminate cruelty to animals,” he says. “I’m convinced that the HSUS is one of a handful of organizations that can do that. I want to focus on where I can do the most good.”
